School of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Guangdong University of Technology was formed by the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering and the Department of Bioengineering of School of Chemical Engineering and Light Industry, and Institute of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences in October 2018. The School aims to cultivate top talents in the biomedical industry based on Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
The School is located in South Science and Technology Building, High Education Mega Center Campus of GDUT, with a total building area of nearly 100,000 square meters. It has five scientific research platforms, includes Drugs design and evaluation, Antibody, Histological analysis and translational medicine, Pharmacological and pharmacodynamic evaluation, and New pharmaceutical preparation. With comprehensive facilities and high-end equipment worth more than 100 million yuan, the School provides a good foundation for discipline construction, talent cultivation, scientific research, and community service.
The School has a faculty with excellent professional title structure, high level of education, senior industry background, International visions and competitiveness. The School now has more than 50 faculty and staff, and many high-level talents and senior returned scholars. Among teaching and research personnel, there are 13 senior professional titles, 14 advanced, with a doctoral degree accounting for more than 90% of the teachers, 1 Guangdong Innovation Team, 2 Leading Talents of Guangdong Province, 2 cultivating personnel for Thousand-Hundred-Ten provincial program, 6 Hundred Talent Program for Young Scientist of GDUT, 2 Talent Cultivation Program of GDUT. Our teacher team has a reasonable academic qualification, professional title and age structure. In recent year, it has undertaken more than 100 national, provincial and municipal science and technology projects, with research funding of nearly 80 million yuan, and won the second prize of Scientific and Technological Achievement of Guangdong Province.
The School has formed a relatively complete high-level talent training system. It has two undergraduate majors in Pharmaceutical Engineering and Bioengineering. As a secondary discipline, Pharmaceutical Engineering has the right to confer master’s degree and doctoral degree. In 2017, the Pharmaceutical Engineering major passed Chinese Engineering Education Accreditation. In 2018, the major was approved as a key construction specialty in Guangdong Province. At present, the School owned National Engineering Practice Education Center of GDUT-GPH (Guangzhou Phar. Holdings), Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Medicine Food Homology Engineering Center of Guangdong Province. Now there are more than 730 students in the school, including more than 600 undergraduates, 110 graduate students, and 21 doctoral students. The School adheres to the integration of production and education, school-enterprise cooperation, and continuously improves the level of talent training. Graduates are highly recognized by related industry. Over the years, the first employment rate has reached 98%. Some graduates serve well-known pharmaceutical companies such as the US Pfizer, Roche Pharmaceuticals, German Merck, GPH, Livzon Medicine , CR Sanjiu Medicine, and Neptunus Medicine; some pursue advanced studies at famous universities home and abroad such as the University of Wisconsin, Northeastern University, Rutgers University, the University of Liverpool, University of London, Peking University, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University.
The School attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation. It has cooperated with internationally renowned universities to conduct medicine development research, including Alan Conley Anti-Tumor Medicine Research Laboratory of GDUT-Rutgers University and Medicine Research and Development Joint Laboratory of GDUT- the University of Liverpool. The School also jointly establish joint laboratory with multinational enterprises such as Waters. The School fully responds to national science and technology foreign policy. It has guided the training of more than 10 foreign post-doctors and international students, and undertaken technical training workshops for developing countries of Ministry of Science and Technology.
With the high-level university construction of GDUT, the School has built a world-class biomedical research and development platform, and established unique research direction in the fields such as development and utilization of high-value natural active ingredients (natural medicine, marine medicine), bio-chemicals (genetic engineering medicine, antibody, biocatalysis and biotransformation, bio-environmental protection), pharmaceutical engineering (drugs design, Pharmacological and pharmacodynamic evaluation, pharmaceutical analysis, new pharmaceutical preparations).
